Schools: prepare before moving

A family checklist for location, admissions and timing.

By UKpedia24Sources checked: 2026-09-20

Start with your address and local authority

Identify your city and UK nation, then open the council or education authority website. Admissions and school stages are not identical across the UK.

Ask about the correct application route

Explain the child’s age and stage of the move. Ask where to apply, what evidence is needed and which dates matter. Living near a school does not guarantee a place; use published admissions procedures.

  • Is this a new-year or in-year application?
  • Which address and other documents are required?
  • How can you follow progress and when should you expect a reply?
  • What language or additional educational support is available?

Keep track of responses

Record the organisation, link and contact date. Draft an English enquiry with the template tool and adapt it before sending. Do not put children’s sensitive details into general tools.

Sources and next step

Local rules can differ. Consult the source for your part of the UK before acting.
