Birmingham: one city council, a regional transport network

Your first week in Birmingham: council, Council Tax, buses, a GP and school places.

Living in Birmingham: what to sort out first

If you are moving to Birmingham, first check your address is in Birmingham City Council, not a neighbour such as Sandwell or Solihull. Then register for Council Tax, register with a GP, and choose a bus payment method that caps your spending. For 2026/27, Band D Council Tax in Birmingham is £2,353.17 a year, and an adult single bus trip on National Express West Midlands costs £3.

This guide is for people arriving to work, study or join family. It covers the rules in England.

Your council: Birmingham City Council and its boundaries

Not everything called “Birmingham” is in Birmingham City Council; some nearby addresses belong to other West Midlands councils. Inside the city, Sutton Coldfield and New Frankley also pay an extra local council charge.

  1. Take the full postcode from your tenancy agreement.
  2. Enter it in Find your local council on GOV.UK ↗.
  3. If your council is Birmingham, register your account on the council’s Council Tax page ↗.

Council Tax in Birmingham for 2026/27

You will usually pay Council Tax if you are 18 or over and live in the property (GOV.UK ↗). Bands are based on a home’s value on a fixed date set in law, not today’s price. Birmingham City Council ↗ publishes these charges for the year 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. They include a 2% precept that helps fund adult social care:

Band Birmingham Sutton Coldfield Town Council area
A £1,568.78 £1,615.42
B £1,830.25 £1,884.66
C £2,091.71 £2,153.90
D £2,353.17 £2,423.13
E £2,876.09 £2,961.60
F £3,399.02 £3,500.08
G £3,921.96 £4,038.56
H £4,706.34 £4,846.26

For Band D, Sutton Coldfield costs £69.96 a year more than the rest of the city; New Frankley has its own table on the same page. The council warns about scam calls asking for a fee to “correct” your band and arrange a refund. Check your band with the GOV.UK band checker ↗, challenge it with the Valuation Office Agency directly, and keep paying at your current band until it decides.

Reductions: 25% off if you live alone, 50% off if everyone in the home is disregarded, and no bill if everyone is a full-time student (student rules ↗). Example: one person living alone in a Band C home pays 75% of £2,091.71, about £1,568.78 a year, once the discount is applied.

Getting around: TfWM, National Express and Swift

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) organises regional transport, including the West Midlands Metro tram. National Express West Midlands is one of the city’s bus operators; its fares are below.

nBus ticket on National Express West Midlands Price
Adult single trip £3
Adult day ticket £5.50
Single trip, aged 5 to 18 £1.50
Day ticket, aged 5 to 18 £2.80
Group day ticket (up to 5 adults, or 2 adults and up to 4 children) £9.70
nBus + Metro adult day ticket (bus and tram) £9.30

Source: National Express West Midlands fares ↗. Day tickets also cover other operators in the nBus scheme. Ages 16 to 18 must show a West Midlands 16-18 Swift card, and children aged 4 and under travel free with a paying passenger.

  • Tap & Cap: tap the same card or device each time you board and fares are capped; the 7-day cap runs Sunday to Saturday. It only works on National Express buses (source ↗).
  • Swift Go: a TfWM card for all trams and most buses, capped at the price of a 1-day, 3-day or weekly ticket. You need a Swift account. On the tram, tap on and off every time or risk a maximum journey charge or a £100 penalty fare (TfWM ↗).
  • Swift Pay As You Go: a pre-paid card for bus and tram. TfWM ↗ says it may suit you if you do not travel every day, are under 18, want to share a card, or do not yet have a bank account.

If your trip mixes operators or includes the tram, Swift Go usually fits better. See our transport guide.

Healthcare: registering with a GP in Birmingham

The NHS ↗ says you do not need ID, proof of address, proof of immigration status or an NHS number to register with a GP. When you register a child, you may be asked for proof of the child’s ID and address, and that you are their parent or guardian.

  1. Find surgeries that cover your address with Find a GP ↗.
  2. Register your whole household in your first week.
  3. For urgent help that is not an emergency, use NHS 111 ↗. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

The prescription charge in England is £9.90 per item (NHS ↗), and some groups are exempt. More in our healthcare guide.

Schools in Birmingham

Most children in England start Reception in the September after their fourth birthday (GOV.UK ↗). You apply through the council where you live, even if the school you want is in another council area.

Stage Applications close Offers sent
Primary school 15 January 16 April
Secondary school 31 October 1 March

Source: GOV.UK ↗. If you arrive during the school year, make an in-year application through the council. If your child has an education, health and care (EHC) plan naming a school, that school must give them a place (GOV.UK ↗). For a private school, contact the school directly. See our schools guide.

Universities in Birmingham

Universities in the city include the University of Birmingham, Aston University, Birmingham City University, Newman University and University College Birmingham. Check any provider before you pay with the GOV.UK checker ↗. Visa and budget planning are in our study in the UK guide.

Community and halal services

According to a Census 2021 briefing from Birmingham City Observatory ↗, 29.9% of Birmingham residents (341,811 people) described themselves as Muslim. That is the highest proportion among both the Core Cities and the West Midlands local authorities. This is data about religion, not Arab origin, and not a guide to where to live.

To find services, open our directory and choose mosques or halal restaurants. Check details with the business before you visit.

Common mistakes in Birmingham

  • Paying a company that promises to lower your band. The council itself warns about these calls. Go to the Valuation Office Agency directly.
  • Expecting Tap & Cap to work on every bus. It only works on National Express buses. For other operators, use Swift Go.
  • Forgetting to tap off the tram with Swift Go. You risk a maximum journey charge or a £100 penalty fare. On the bus, you do not need to tap when you get off.
  • Ignoring the extra charge in Sutton Coldfield. Every band costs more there than in the rest of the city.
