My UK plan
Moving to the UK checklist: tasks ordered by your goal and stage, from visa and eVisa to GP registration and NI number, with progress saved on your device.
A better-informed decision.
Complete the form to see your breakdown.
My UK plan is a short moving to the UK checklist that shows only what you need to do now, based on your goal (work, study, moving with family or visiting) and your stage (before arrival, first week or first month). Each task links to a guide on this site or an official GOV.UK or NHS service. Tick tasks as you finish them and your progress is saved in your browser, with no account or sign-up.
Who it is for
Newcomers who want a clear order of tasks instead of a long list: skilled workers, students, families and visitors, whether you have a visa already or are still planning.
How the tool works
- Choose your goal: Work, Study, Move with family or Visit.
- Choose your stage: Before arrival, First week or First month.
- Arrival date (optional). If you add it, a “Calendar reminder” button creates an .ics file for your phone calendar, reminding you on arrival day to review your plan.
- Tick tasks. Each tick is saved at once and the progress counter updates.
- Export. “Export my plan” downloads a JSON file with your choices and completed tasks.

Example: a skilled worker in the first week
Choose “Work” and “First week” and you see 5 tasks, with the counter at 0 / 5:
- eVisa. You need a UKVI account to see your eVisa, and it is free. Check your name, date of birth and conditions, and report any error through the official service.
- Health. In England you can register with a GP surgery for free, and the NHS says you do not need ID, proof of address or proof of immigration status. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own services, covered in the healthcare guide.
- NI number. GOV.UK says you can start work before you get your number if you can prove your right to work. Your number may already be on your eVisa in your UKVI account.
- Transport. Work out your door-to-door commute before buying any ticket.
- Bank account. Most employers pay wages into a UK account. If you have no UK address history yet, a basic bank account is designed for that situation — see MoneyHelper: basic bank accounts ↗.
Finish two and the counter shows 2 / 5. Switch to “First month” and 5 new tasks appear: local bills, budget check, travel log, checking the tax code on your first payslip and starting your credit file.
Choosing the right stage
Pick the stage you are actually in. If you have not arrived, start with “Before arrival” and do the visa and fees tasks first, because everything else depends on them. Progress is saved per task, so your ticks stay when you switch stages. If you are moving with family and working, try both “Work” and “Move with family”: the NI task appears only for work, and the school task only for family.
What the tool does not do
- It does not decide which visa you need; the visa task opens the GOV.UK checker.
- It does not submit anything or send your data anywhere.
- It does not sync between devices.
- It does not cover special cases such as asylum or family reunion, which need specialist advice.
- The Visit goal is deliberately short: one first-week task on urgent care and one first-month task on checking how long you can stay.
Common mistakes
- Sorting housing before the visa. Check your route and its fees first.
- Clearing browser data. This deletes your progress. Export your plan first.
- Leaving your eVisa unchecked. A wrong detail can cause problems when you prove your right to work or rent.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account?
No. Everything is saved in your browser.
Can I move my plan to another phone?
You can export the file and keep it, but the tool does not sync automatically.
Why can’t I see the school task?
It appears for “Move with family” in the “First week” stage.
What does the calendar reminder do?
It downloads a file that adds an event on your arrival date, with a link back to your plan.
