Method: price per gram = USD price per troy ounce ÷ USD per GBP ÷ 31.1034768 g. Gold and silver prices refresh at most every hour, the exchange rate every 6 hours.
This zakat calculator adds up what you own today in pounds, takes away debts and bills due now, and compares the net total with the nisab at current gold and silver prices. If you reach the nisab, it works out 2.5% of the net total, to the nearest penny. The result is arithmetic, not a religious ruling.
What the zakat calculator adds and subtracts
Every field is optional. The tool adds cash (at home and in the bank), savings and ISAs, gold in grams for each karat (24k, 22k, 21k, 18k), silver in grams, shares and investments, business stock, and money owed to you that you expect to receive. It subtracts one figure: debts and bills due now. If debts exceed assets, the net is £0. Scholars differ on deducting debts and on how to count shares; the tool simply uses what you enter.
Nisab: 85 g of gold or 595 g of silver?
The page shows both. Both are widely used, and scholars differ on which applies. The silver nisab is much lower. The selector starts on silver as a technical default, not a view on the question, and the result also shows whether you reach the other nisab.
How gold is valued by karat
Value = grams × (karat ÷ 24) × the 24k price per gram. So 22k is about 91.67%, 21k 87.5%, 18k 75%. 24k is treated as pure; real 24k bullion is usually 99.9%, so that line can read up to 0.1% high. Making charges are not included. See today’s gold price in the UK.
A worked example with saved prices
Produced by the tool’s own code with saved sample prices: gold at $4,141.80 and silver at $60.52 per troy ounce (gold-api.com, 3 October 2026) and $1.325361 per £1 (24 September 2026). The two are not from the same moment, so this only illustrates the maths. At these prices 24k gold is about £100.47 a gram, silver about £1.47, the gold nisab £8,540.14 and the silver nisab £873.58.
Live prices change. The tool refreshes gold and silver at most every hour and the exchange rate every 6 hours, so your result will differ from this example even with the same inputs.
| Item | Working | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Cash | as entered | £1,800.00 |
| Savings | as entered | £3,500.00 |
| 22k gold | 40 g × 22/24 × £100.47 | £3,683.98 |
| 18k gold | 15 g × 18/24 × £100.47 | £1,130.31 |
| Total | £10,114.29 | |
| Minus debts due now | £600.00 | |
| Net | £9,514.29 | |
| Zakat | £9,514.29 × 2.5% | £237.86 |
This is above both thresholds, so the answer is £237.86 either way. With £3,500 of savings and nothing else, the silver nisab gives £87.50 and the gold nisab gives nothing due.
Why the nisab in pounds changes every day
The nisab is fixed in grams, but its value in pounds follows the dollar price of metal and the dollar-to-pound rate: USD per ounce ÷ USD per GBP ÷ 31.1034768 g. The page shows when each price was last updated. To convert the result, use the currency converter.
Hawl: the tool does not track dates
Zakat is due once wealth has stayed at or above the nisab for a lunar year (hawl). The calculator does not store dates or know when you first reached the nisab, so run it on your usual zakat date
What this calculator does not cover
- Detailed business accounts: one stock figure only. An accountant from the accountants directory can help.
- Pensions: their treatment is debated and can depend on access.
- Property, whether your home, let or held for sale.
For these, ask a trusted scholar or a local mosque.
Giving zakat through a UK charity
Check the charity is registered
Search the charity’s name or number on the free register before you give. The GOV.UK register covers England and Wales only; Scotland has the OSCR register and Northern Ireland has its own.
Gift Aid basics
If you pay UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax, the charity can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give. Donations qualify as long as they are not more than 4 times the tax you paid in that tax year, and you sign a Gift Aid declaration. Higher-rate taxpayers can claim back the difference through Self Assessment or by contacting HMRC.
Frequently asked questions
Is the result a fatwa?
No. It applies 2.5% to what you enter. What counts and which nisab to use are questions for a scholar you trust.
Should I include gold jewellery I wear?
Scholars differ on worn jewellery. The tool counts whatever grams you enter.
Why is my result different from the example?
The example uses saved prices from one day; the tool uses current prices, which move.
Does the tool save my figures?
No. Note your result and the date yourself.
